SHARE: Evolving with Enterprise IT

Ken Ebbe What is the perfect formula for successfully managing change and continually improving process and performance? My answer, backed by more than 20,000 other enterprise computing professionals, is collaboration from many. A sincere advocate of this approach, and a long-time member of SHARE, I’ve seen SHARE as an organization that has for years done just that and more. 2003 was a year like no other, with collaboration

In 2003, SHARE was a true model for this type collaboration resulting in improved effectiveness, not only for itself but for our collective membership. I take pride in the number of programs and events tailored and upgraded in support of the changing landscape we all face in our profession. Newly launched events, such as the Application Development and Integration Symposium and the Enterprise Systems Management Symposium, debuted at the summer 2003 SHARE User Events in Washington, D.C., and brought customized appeal to an evolving audience.

Another example of our expanding program can be found in the “Fine Art of Doing Business with IBM” Workshop, which also took place in conjunction with our Summer Meeting. We recognize that the role of the IT professional often extends beyond systems management and availability to include areas like licensing, contract negotiations, maintenance and support, and this two-day workshop was built to streamline those often-challenging tasks.

I can personally vouch that the take-aways from these concentrated offerings have been outstanding. As a result, we’ve decided to promote the Application Development and The Enterprise Systems Management Symposia as standard offerings at SHARE User Events for the foreseeable future.

As we pat our backs for our triumphs in 2003, keep in mind 2004 has its own design on innovation. Continuing along the path of customized education, another new co-located event, the Enterprise IT Management Symposium, is set to debut in New York August 16-18, 2004, along with its Application Development & Integration, Enterprise Systems Management and USERblue events, which will be returning. Regarding the Enterprise IT Management Symposium, we’re planning a different type of IT leadership event. Picture three days with 27 sessions presented by experienced and high-level speakers from different analyst groups, industry experts, IT executives, and business consultants. Like its tailored counterparts, we’re expecting nothing less than to meet the needs of yet another distinct group in SHARE—the IT leader.

Combine education, networking and industry influence with professionals like you and me seeking common goals, and you get a valuable community with year-round longevity. Top that with the innate ability to grow and adapt with our ever-evolving business, and you get SHARE. I thank you—our members—who have helped to put SHARE at a benchmark position in 2003.

Sincerely,

Ken Ebbe
President, SHARE Inc.

SHARE Recognizes

2003 Award for Excellence in Technology
During the general session at the winter 2003 conference in Dallas, SHARE President, Ken Ebbe, presented Caterpillar Inc. with the 2003 Award for Excellence in Technology. The Award for Excellence, presented on an annual basis, recognizes exceptional use and innovation of enterprise-class computing technologies among SHARE's 2,200-plus member organizations.

Caterpillar was selected for this prestigious award based upon its implementation of IBM's Extended Enterprise Extender functionality. Realized in 2002, this functionality introduced Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking (APPN) capabilities between Caterpillar's corporate headquarters and select facilities in Europe and South America. The successful completion of this project resulted in higher speed links within the Internet Protocol (IP) network, improving file transfer speeds three-to-four times that of the previous method, and allowing for the elimination of dedicated international communication facilities. Furthermore, the implementation enabled Caterpillar to integrate additional business functionality on to the IP network with no significant impact on the physical network or the network's users.

We are both honored and pleased to receive this award from SHARE because it aligns with Caterpillar's focus on information technology solutions that reflect global requirements," said Caterpillar Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Sid Banwart.

"We are thrilled to receive such a distinction," stated William T. Murphy, Caterpillar Senior Technical Specialist responsible for the Extended Enterprise Extender implementation, upon learning of the award selection. "SHARE was a valuable resource to me and to the project team in achieving this goal. Through participation in SHARE, I gained the knowledge and experience necessary to take on a task of this magnitude. The willingness of SHARE members to help during the implementation and testing phases of this project truly contributed to its overall success."

SHARE Distinguished Service Award
At the 2003 SHARE in Dallas, SHARE President, Ken Ebbe, presented the SHARE Distinguished Service Award to Dave Thewlis, former SHARE Chief Standards Officer for his exceptional leadership, industry knowledge and devoted service in helping to bring the organization to the forefront of industry standards from 2000 - 2002.

2003 President’s Award
At the 2003 SHARE in Dallas, SHARE President, Ken Ebbe, presented the 2003 President's Award to Christina McGill of ISPW BenchMark Technologies Ltd. for her efforts in expanding SHARE's technical program through the development of the new Application Development track delivered for the first time in Dallas. The track subsequently evolved into the new Application Development and Integration Symposium, which made its official debut at the 2003 summer conference. Ms. McGill is a long-time volunteer and her company, ISPW BenchMark Technologies, was the first to win SHARE's Award for Excellence in Technology in 2001. In addition to content development and session and speaker coordination, SHARE also has benefited from solid marketing support as a result of her efforts.

Laetitia H. Snow Memorial Award for Humanitarian Service
The Laetitia H. Snow Memorial Award for Humanitarian Service to SHARE (or "Tish" Award) honors individuals who have shown a long-term dedication to SHARE, with contributions to SHARE's culture, people and environment, and is a memorial to Tish Snow, who was, herself, an example of this type of individual. Anne Caluori of the U.S. Army CECOM Software Engineering Center - Belvoir was honored during the general session as the 2003 Tish Snow award recipient for her volunteered time and energy attending SHARE meetings, providing mentorship, and sharing her wealth of knowledge and experience with the SHARE leadership.

Requirements
SHARE Requirements provide IBM with technical input to improve existing products or services, and directions for future offerings and/or releases. Requirements, and the Project or Program discussions involved in submitting them are among the most important work of SHARE. By participating in this process, SHARE member installations contribute knowledge and expertise to help IBM meet current and future information technology needs. Requirements represent SHARE business positions. As such, they must adhere to a high level of quality and timeliness, and must be truly representative of the beliefs held by the majority of SHARE member installations.

2003 was an active year for SHARE Requirements. Throughout 2003, over 700 different Requirements were modified (submitted, discussed, voted on, etc.) by SHARE members. Of those 700 Requirements, 170 have been submitted to IBM. IBM responded to over 230 Requirements during the year. There are currently 430 SHARE members registered for Requirements, and 193 of them registered in 2003.
