In anticipation of our 50th Anniversary, SHARE continued to develop its offerings and meet the expanding educational needs of the SHARE community throughout 2004.

At our general session in Long Beach, The Afterburners, a team of real fighter pilots, shared their five step flawless execution model: Plan, Brief, Execute, Debrief, and Win (if you follow these steps). As SHARE members strive to achieve flawless execution in their businesses, the real-life examples and advice that can be found throughout SHARE can make a world of difference.

The Enterprise IT Management Symposium debuted in 2004 at our conference in New York. This was a different type of leadership event held over three days with a variety of sessions presented by experienced and high-level speakers. This program was specifically designed to meet the ever-changing needs of the IT leader.

In addition to the Enterprise IT Management Symposium, SHARE also held the Application Development & Integration Symposium, the Enterprise Systems Management Symposium, and USERblue. These events continue to be successful and provide valuable education and networking for the diverse members of the SHARE community.

As we prepare to celebrate the milestone achievement of 50 Years in the IT Industry, I have no doubt that this unique organization is just beginning to realize the variety of ways that it can achieve its mission. SHARE will use this 50 year milestone - the first of any user group - to propel us forward into the future. I look forward to the celebration throughout 2005 and to our next 50 years.

SHARE's New Programs

In summer of 2004, the SHARE User Events in New York marked the debut of the Enterprise IT Management Symposium. This symposium was introduced for IT Leaders who face numerous challenges in the ever-changing business environment. The program took place over three days and featured a variety of industry leaders, experts, business consultants, and vendors who brought diverse experiences, viewpoints and solutions.

After debuting at the summer 2003 SHARE User Events in Washington, D.C., the Application Development and Integration Symposium and the Enterprise Systems Management Symposium were again offered at both 2004 SHARE User Events. These two symposia reflect trends in enterprise IT environments as well as the needs of SHARE members and their colleagues. The Application Development and Integration Symposium focused on application development, support and middleware in complex enterprise environments. The Enterprise Systems Management Symposium concentrated on the top issues that confront data center staff: Disaster Recovery, Security and managing the cost of computing. Registered full-week attendees were able to attend educational sessions at all SHARE User Events for one registration fee.

SHARE Recognizes

2004 Award for Excellence in Technology
During the general session at the winter 2004 conference in Long Beach, SHARE President, Ken Ebbe, presented Nationwide Insurance with the 2004 Award for Excellence in Technology for its achievements in monitoring usage and costs in running DB2 transactions, and subsequent licensing arrangements with IBM. The Award for Excellence, presented on an annual basis, recognizes exceptional use and innovation of enterprise-class computing technologies among SHARE's 2,100-plus member organizations.

When Nationwide Insurance was faced with rising support and licensing costs, the project team at Nationwide conducted a thorough analysis to determine the optimal data access method for running DB2 transactions. Realizing the higher costs involved when transactions crossed mainframe subsystems, Nationwide developed a set of standards, known as "Building Codes," for its development team. Nationwide also took the data from its analysis to determine and negotiate a more cost-efficient enterprise-level license for DB2 Connect from IBM. Ultimately, this effort has dramatically reduced mainframe CPU and licensing expenditures at Nationwide.

Laetitia H. Snow Memorial Award for Humanitarian Service
The Laetitia H. Snow Memorial Award for Humanitarian Service to SHARE (or "Tish" Award) honors individuals who have shown a long-term dedication to SHARE, with contributions to SHARE's culture, people and environment, and is a memorial to Tish Snow, who was, herself, an example of this type of individual. Robert Rannie of Northern Illinois University was honored during the general session as the 2004 Tish Snow award recipient for his energy and dedication to SHARE in developing training programs to help improve the skills of new attendees, speakers and chairpersons.

SHARE Requirements provide IBM with technical input to improve existing products or services, and directions for future offerings and/or releases. Requirements, and the Project or Program discussions involved in submitting them are among the most important work of SHARE. By participating in this process, SHARE member installations contribute knowledge and expertise to help IBM meet current and future information technology needs. Requirements represent SHARE business positions. As such, they must adhere to a high level of quality and timeliness, and must be truly representative of the beliefs held by the majority of SHARE member installations.

The SHARE Requirements program was very active in 2004. Throughout the year, 152 Requirements were submitted to IBM. IBM responded to over 415 Requirements during the year. 108 SHARE members registered to participate in the Requirements program in 2004.
