2005 was a great year for SHARE. Aside from celebrating its 50th anniversary, no small thing in and of itself, SHARE enjoyed a number of successes throughout the year. Attendance at our two, week-long user events exceeded our expectations; we recorded our first positive net income solely from operations in thirteen years; we incubated a new project called "zNextGen;" we recognized and celebrated efforts of SHARE ambassadors through a promotion called “Bring ‘Em To Boston”; we began to experience frequent and complimentary media coverage; and we continued to advance long-range strategic planning through an effort called “Project Spark”.
Celebrating 50 years. To celebrate this occasion, SHARE hosted a number of anniversary activities at both the winter and summer 2005 SHARE User Event conferences. These activities included dedicated sessions discussing SHARE's history, as well as its future, a memorabilia display in the Technology Exchange expo that included items of SHARE's and the computing industry's history, and a 50th anniversary cake and champagne toast during one of the evening receptions. While in Boston, SmithBucklin, our HQ operating partner, hosted a reception for SHARE volunteers at Boston's historic Union Oyster House to celebrate SHARE's 30 years with SmithBucklin.
Stabilizing our financial foundation. The SHARE Board of Directors passed an operating budget for FY 2005 that included substantial expense reductions. Taking this sign as a mandate to improve our bottom line, SHARE management worked closely with our Executive Director and the HQ staff to seek efficiencies and weed out unnecessary expenses. Our year-end results included a 12% reduction in operating expenses (vs. approved budget) as well as an 8% increase in revenue (versus the approved budget).
Celebrating SHARE's volunteer ambassadors. SHARE launched, “Bring 'Em to Boston”, a promotion co-sponsored by IBM Business Partners MSI Systems Integrators and Logicalis. This promotion rewarded loyal SHARE attendees for introducing SHARE to newcomers through numerous recognitions and the opportunity to win three Grand Prizes valued at $5,000 each! The promotion created a substantial buzz heading into and while in Boston, and resulted in nearly one hundred new attendees. We deemed it a great success.
The incubation of a new project. SHARE and IBM worked in close partnership to jointly launch zNextGen. This initiative creates a global community for students and IT professionals interested in entering the mainframe computing arena. It is one approach to providing the next generation of mainframe IT professionals to replace the current population expected to retire over the next several years. It also provides a forum for those senior mainframe professionals to pass on their painfully learned experience to the next generation. zNextGen was unveiled in Boston to much media coverage and the excitement of all our attendees. By year-end, the initiative was formalizing into a SHARE Project, featured a highly-energized steering committee, and was busy preparing specific plans for Seattle (Winter, 2006) and beyond.
SHARE retains a PR firm. In a first-ever decision, SHARE's Board of Directors entered into an engagement with TechImage, a Chicago-based public relations firm that specializes in the IT industry. In addition to the dollar investment, SHARE management (Officers, Directors, and other volunteer leaders) invested significant time and energy to undergo media training and participate in numerous interviews with various media representatives. The SHARE Board is monitoring multiple measurements that seek to gauge the return on all this investment. Overall, we are very pleased and have enjoyed a great deal of positive press including articles in The Boston Globe, InformationWeek, eWeek, Computerworld, and ITWorld.com.
Planning for the Future. As successful as SHARE has been, we know that we cannot stand still. Therefore the Board of Directors authorized a task force to plan for the future, consider what changes might be needed to ignite excitement and increased participation in SHARE. This Project Spark task force has been examining the IT environment, changes in the IT workforce, and will be proposing changes and new activities that will continue to keep SHARE vital and successful for the foreseeable future without losing the critical essence that makes SHARE what it is.
As I reflect on the achievement of SHARE reaching its half-century mark, I am filled with pride and humility at the opportunity to serve as President. This milestone is proof-positive of the exemplary educational and networking opportunities SHARE has been offering its members for the past 50 years. I am confident that with the efforts of our tireless volunteers, SHARE will remain relevant and healthy for the next 50 years.

SHARE's New Programs
IBM and SHARE jointly launched a new initiative at the SHARE User Events in Boston, the zNextGen program. zNextGen is a global community for students and new IT professionals interested in mainframe computing. Resources will be made available in the program to ensure these emerging professionals can find jobs quickly upon graduation, can network with each other and with other generations of mainframe professionals, and to transfer skills from retiring mainframe experts to these up-and-coming professionals. The group's first meeting was held offsite during the SHARE User Events in Boston.

Education
SHARE continued to deliver exceptional training for enterprise-class technologists in 2005, attracting more than 4,000 attendees to its in-person training events over the year.
SHARE User Events in Anaheim - February 27 – March 4, 2005
From
February 27 – March 4, 2005, SHARE welcomed over 2,200 professional IBM technology users from around the world to Anaheim, California for the winter 2005 SHARE User Events. SHARE participants took full advantage of several hundred hours of technical education, saw the latest developments from more than 80 exhibiting companies, spent countless hours meeting with and learning from fellow users and product specialists, and benefited from hands-on labs and expert panel discussions.
One highlight of the Anaheim technical program included sessions that addressed the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX) as well as HIPAA, Canada C-6 laws and new state laws across the United States. It is critical that IT professionals understand these laws so they can help their companies achieve compliance effectively. The SHARE User Events provided these sessions as a way to give attendees a head start in learning about these requirements. Another highlight was the comprehensive WebSphere technical program. Sessions in this program addressed the entire scope of WebSphere issues, including administration on a variety of platforms, and offered opportunities to speak to IBM WebSphere developers. Finally, there were several new IBM product announcements that were made throughout the week during technical sessions.
Instead of a General Session/Keynote in Anaheim, attendees were encouraged to attend the individual Program and Project keynotes/featured sessions. These sessions provided relevant technical information and updates in attendees' interest areas.

Requirements
SHARE Requirements provide IBM with technical input to improve existing products or services, and directions for future offerings and/or releases. Requirements, and the Project or Program discussions involved in submitting them are among the most important work of SHARE. By participating in this process, SHARE member installations contribute knowledge and expertise to help IBM meet current and future information technology needs. Requirements represent SHARE business positions. As such, they must adhere to a high level of quality and timeliness, and must be truly representative of the beliefs held by the majority of SHARE member installations.
In 2005, the SHARE Requirements program underwent a transition from the Lotus Domino/Notes database to an online system using “standard” open source tools (JAVA, APACHE/TOMCAT, MySQL). By the end of 2005, 99% of the basic functionality was moved to this new system. The migration of GSE will occur in 2006. SHARE would like to extend a special thank you to Steve Ryder for leading this initiative.
In 2005, SHARE submitted 94 requirements to IBM and IBM responded to 330 requirements.
