In reflecting on SHARE's 51st year, I'm flooded with the remembrance of many great successes. SHARE's focus for the year was on building and extending our community and preparing for growth and longevity. Towards that end, the organization continued its investment in a number of successful programs while introducing fresh, new initiatives. Staying relevant to our community was also a theme this year, and the Board and Program Council continued to focus heavily on long range strategic planning.

SHARE is renowned for its broad-based education program. Each technical conference provides more than 700 hours of leading-edge technical education, with a wide range of programming worthwhile to a variety of professional technical disciplines including: System Programmers and Administrators, Application Developers, IT Managers, Database Administrators, System Architects, IT Strategists and Project Managers. SHARE events deliver expertise, hands on instruction, new product information, access to developers, and more user experiences than any other training event in its class.

Given the tremendously successful program launch of “Bring ‘Em to Boston” in 2005, SHARE brought back the member loyalty program for the Seattle event. “Show ‘Em Seattle", sponsored by premier IBM Business Partners Logicalis and MSI Systems Integrators, was wildly successful, resulting in more than 100 SHARE customers bringing their colleagues to SHARE.

Also at SHARE in Boston, SHARE and IBM worked in partnership to launch zNextGen, a global community for students and IT professionals interested in entering the mainframe computing arena. 2006 saw zNextGen blossom. They became a formal SHARE project and hosted their own educational track with opening and closing sessions at both the Baltimore and Seattle events. SHARE is eager to support this community as it continues to grow and prosper.

SHARE Seattle successfully welcomed another IBM community, zNTP (New Technology Professionals). zNTP is a community of IBM field support staff and their customers who came to SHARE to experience dedicated training previously received at IBM facilities. 65 new participants benefited from SHARE 's robust program.

Because SHARE recognizes that IBM is investing significantly in the academic community to prepare students for their IT careers, a group of professors engaged with IBM's Academic Initiative were invited to experience “A Taste of SHARE”. The group represented a diverse collection of academic professionals from across the US. These visitors were invited to attend sessions to sample technical content, visit the SHARE Technology Exchange, and meet with IBM and the SHARE Board of Directors; all while experiencing first-hand the unstructured community and networking aspects of SHARE. The one day event concluded with a feedback session providing unparalleled insight into how SHARE and IBM can foster this community.

2006 also saw the launch of a new marketing program entitled “A SHARE'd Experience”. These documented testimonials allow members and attendees to share their stories, recounting the value they derived for their organizations and for their individual careers from their participation at SHARE. Look for this program to be expanded in 2007.

Although SHARE continues to be successful, we recognize the need to continually ensure we are remaining relevant and essential to our member community and beyond. Thus, the SHARE Board of Directors spent a majority of 2006 on short and long term strategic planning, focusing on expanding our sales channels, revitalizing the SHARE brand, improving our conference product and researching new product initiatives. Financially, SHARE ended the year in a position of strength; having exceeded our budgeted revenue by approximately 103%. Such fiscal responsibility gives us the opportunity to invest in the future of SHARE, which we'll be doing as we kick off our strategic planning initiatives.

As I look back over the year past, I'm extremely proud to serve in a leadership role of such a vibrant organization. I recognize that it's the combined effort of a large volunteer community, as well as the support of its membership that has shaped SHARE. I thank you all for your dedication and allegiance to SHARE and look forward to working with you again in the coming year.

SHARE's New Programs

zNTP and zNextGen
As a result of collaborative opportunities with IBM, SHARE's acknowledged Strategic Partner, the organization welcomed two new communities of mainframe-focused professionals:
zNTP (New Technology Professionals) is a community of IBM staff – and customers - who formerly held their own dedicated training at IBM facilities. SHARE Seattle marked their first integration into SHARE, when 65 new participants benefited from SHARE's robust program.
zNextGen, launched in SHARE Boston, is a community of IT professionals new to mainframe technologies. Using SHARE as a conduit, dozens of mainframe “newbies” received a week of intense education, community-building activities, and access to an unparalleled experience base of practicing professionals. This group officially became a SHARE project at SHARE Seattle and expanded their participation to include opening and closing sessions at SHARE Baltimore.

Show ‘Em Seattle
Following a tremendously successful program launch at our summer 2005 conference, SHARE brought back the member loyalty program for our Seattle events. Called “Show ‘Em Seattle” and sponsored once again by premier IBM Business Partners Logicalis and MSI Systems Integrators, this promotion recognized and rewarded SHARE customers who introduce SHARE to colleagues by way of attendance at our semi-annual conferences. More than 100 SHARE customers participated in this promotion for the Seattle event.

A Taste of SHARE
In Baltimore, SHARE partnered with IBM to host members of the academic community at our conference as we explored ways to enhance our efforts to support the academic community in preparing students for their IT careers. A group of professors who are already engaged with IBM were invited to experience "A Taste of SHARE”. The group represented institutions such as University of Maryland, Syracuse University, Howard University, Illinois State University, Widener College, Stevens Institute of Technology and Long Island University.

On Monday, academic visitors attended sessions to sample technical content, visit the SHARE Technology Exchange and meet with IBM and the SHARE Board of Directors. They were also invited to the Welcome Reception to see first-hand the unstructured community and networking aspects of the SHARE experience.

Requirements
SHARE Requirements provide IBM with technical input to improve existing products or services, and directions for future offerings and/or releases. Requirements, and the Project or Program discussions involved in submitting them, are among the most important work of SHARE. By participating in this process, SHARE member installations contribute knowledge and expertise to help IBM meet current and future information technology needs. Requirements represent SHARE business positions. As such, they must adhere to a high level of quality and timeliness, and must be truly representative of the beliefs held by the majority of SHARE member installations.

In 2005, the SHARE Requirements program underwent a transition from the Lotus Domino/Notes database to an online system using standard open source tools (JAVA, APACHE/TOMCAT, MySQL). By the end of 2006, all of the basic functionality, as well as GSE, was moved to this new system. SHARE would like to extend a special thank you to Steve Ryder for leading this initiative.

In 2006, IBM submitted responses to 465 requirements, 201 of which were then retired. 1544 votes were cast for 77 requirements, and average of 20 votes per requirement.
