System managed duplexing for Coupling Facility (CF) structures enhances availability through rapid fail over that masks CF failures and connectivity loss. It also enables failure isolation that applications may need when using an internal CF. But the cost of (synchronous) duplexing, especially longer response times, often precluded its use. But the new asynchronous duplexing protocol for lock structures provides the availability characteristics of a duplex structure with response times similar to a simplex request. Duplex lock structures are now practical, even at extended distance! We'll contrast the protocols, illustrate advantages, discuss configuration, and explain the changes required of exploiters.-Mark A. Brooks-IBM Corporation
