Session Abstract
DevOps is now here for the mainframe. Much has been written in the annals of business management about the silos that exist in large enterprises, and one of the widest chasms is the one separating the Business side of an organization from the Information Technology side. A recent blog from Gartner outlines the problem: “CIOs are under mounting pressure to address digital needs with ‘grow’ and ‘transform’ functions, as well as to renovate the operational environment with ‘run’ functions. They also must still demonstrate how IT is meeting strategic business goals.”
A key component of these goals is getting applications into production faster with the highest standards of performance and availability. Borne from this need is the DevOps methodology for app development and based on Agile methods. DevOps has been a proven method for better app development in distributed environments and now has its sights on mainframe development. The sheer volume of application code in mainframe apps along with the numerous developers around the globe working on a single mainframe application makes DevOps particularly difficult in mainframe environments.
Craig S. Mullins provides insight into what DevOps on the mainframe means for SHARE attendees. Mullins is president and principal consultant of Mullins Consulting, Inc. and brings more than three decades of experience in all facets of database system development including creating and teaching database classes, systems analysis and design, data analysis, database and system administration, performance management, and data modeling. Mullins is a frequent speaker at SHARE events and have been working with Db2 on the mainframe since Version 1.-Craig S. Mullins-Mullins Consulting, Inc.; Colin Oakhill-Insoft Software GmbH
