VIPA, DVIPA, and Sysplex Distributor may be part of a high availability design. This topic covers the evolution from Virtual IP Address (VIPA) to Dynamic VIPA to Sysplex Distributor. Configuration options will be covered including distribution methods and source VIPA options. VIPA was originally created for z/OS multi-homed OSA design. This enabled dynamic backup when an interface was lost. Next Dynamic VIPA (DVIPA) provided for backup between LPARs in the sysplex. Finally Sysplex Distributor provides distribution load balancing and dynamic backup to target applications running on multiple LPARs in the sysplex.-Linda Harrison-IBM Corporation
