In this session we will cover the basic components of the z/VM Virtual Switch (VSWITCH) and its Theory of Operation. We will focus on how physical Ethernet switches work and how they interface with z/VM. In addition to learning how hosts communicate on a LAN and how it works with TCP/IP, you will learn about the difference between z/VM Guest LANs and the VSWITCH, the difference between switching and routing, the meanings of 'Layer 2' and 'Layer 3', authorization options, HiperSocket-VSWITCH Bridge, Virtual Edge Port Aggregator (VEPA) and other IEEE standards. Also we'll discuss the various high availability options, including Link Aggregation.-Alan Altmark-IBM Corporation
