Disk (DASD) space is one of the most critical resources in any z/OS
installation. As a result of more than 50 years of evolution, however, the
rules, requirements, and restrictions for allocating and z/OS disk datasets can
be remarkably arcane and complex. Disk space requirements and limits differ
depending on dataset format (partitioned, sequential, extended, or striped),
dataset characteristics (blksize, encryption, compression), SPACE specification
in JCL or data class, and architectural restrictions (extent count, maximum
size), as well as many other details. This complexity leads inevitably to
confusion, poor space utilization, and eventually, application abends. What's a
programmer to do? In this session we'll discuss the history and intricacies of
the disk allocation process, the causes and remedies (and prevention) of
out-of-space errors, and how to get quick information about current disk space
status.
