VS Code extensions for Java development have matured a lot over the last few
years making VS Code a real alternative to the classic and dedicated Java IDEs.
In addition, with the availability and maturity of extensions available for z/OS
Enterprise application development you can recommend VS Code as the editor for
all your z/OS development needs covering all the languages available for the
platform. In this presentation we give you an overview for how to get started
with VS Code for z/OS Java: which extensions to use, how to configure your
development environment, locally and on z/OS, how to use tools and automation
frameworks such as Zowe or Ansible to deploy and remotely debug your
applications, where to find and use z/OS Java libraries such as JZOS or Decimal
Arithmetic Library, and how to utilize frameworks such as Maven or Gradle. We
will also show examples and discuss ways for onboarding next generation
developers by providing automation and tool customizations that make writing,
running, and debugging code for z/OS almost feel like local/distributed
development workflows.
