The first line of defense against a poorly performing application is to make sure you have properly tuned SQL.   However, before you start tuning your SQL, you need a methodology, a process you can follow.  This presentation discusses how to prepare to tune your SQL along with a look at some effective SQL coding techniques and how to avoid a few SQL pitfalls along with a discussion on how the dynamic statement cache can benefit your SQL tuning efforts.
