DFSMS plays a vital role in the data center, controlling DASD datasets throughout their life cycle, from initial allocation to final expiration, as well as tape library and device selection. The ACS routines and the SMS constructs (data class, storage class, management class, and storage group) are at the heart of system-managed storage and an understanding of their function and coding is important for any z/OS user. This session will provide an introduction to DFSMS, including a discussion of the most important aspects of each of the SMS constructs, examples of ACS routine coding, and a discussion of SMS management of tape as well as DASD.-Steve Pryor-DTS Software, Inc.
