The mainframe is over 50 years old,  and two robust,  and mature activity reporting mechanisms exist = System Measurement Facility and Resource Management Facility.   These facilities produce activity tracking records which everyone involved in performance analysis,  capacity planning and management,  and mainframe accounting should know about.

There's an ocean of data available,  and it's critical that the analyst begin by collecting and understanding the basic records.  With knowledge of just a few records and their content,  one can begin to fully know what activity is occurring on the z/OS system and effectively manage it.-Gregory V.
