Recently, IBM has introduced two ways to provision a new z/OS system. IBM Cloud
Provisioning and Management for z/OS allows you to provision a new z/OS system
on-prem, while IBM Wazi as-a-service allows you to create a z/OS Virtual Server
Instance for development and test in IBM Cloud. With the need to leverage our
existing z/OS testing processes against these dynamically provisioned z/OS
systems, we developed a large automation framework using Ansible. Using the
z/OSMF Cloud Provisioning and Management provided framework and a set of
templates, we created a process that provisioned and configured z/OS running in
an LPAR. Ansible automation copied over files and datasets and then setup a
complex application workload in a repeatable fashion. Likewise, we were able to
utilize this same automation for a Wazi as-a-service system in the IBM Cloud.
With this automation in place, we were able to easily able to setup the
provisioned z/OS systems much like the traditional z/OS systems our test team
was used to.
