System z and z/OS' I/O performance architecture "High Performance FICON for System z" (zHPF) aims to improve throughput by increasing the number of bytes transferred per exchange, and simultaneously decreasing the number of sequences in the exchange. z/OS' non-VSAM Access Methods BSAM, QSAM and BPAM exploited zHPF by driving I/O through zHPF Channel Programs to non-Extended-Format Physical Sequential DASD Data Sets and PDS members. In this session, we will provide an introduction to zHPF and how it was implemented by BSAM, QSAM, and BPAM, and we will summarize the BSAM, QSAM, and BPAM performance differences between zHPF mode and traditional mode (with CCWs).
