One the most important performance issues in CICS deals with the handling of I/O. The objective is to minimize the amount of physical I/O operations so as to improve response times as well as CPU reduction. As the saying goes, "the best I/O is the one you do not have to do". CICS provides three methods to process VSAM data sets. These methods are: (1) Non-Shared Resources (NSR) (2) Local Shared Resources (LSR) and (3) Record Level Sharing (RLS). This presentation covers the different buffering techniques that can be used to reduce physical I/O operations usually referred in the statistics as EXCPs. Buffering options for the data and index components vary depending on how the file is to be processed and method used.-Gene Hudders-C\Trek Corporation
