Come to this session for a detailed technical introduction to the IBM zEnterprise 114 (z114) entry level System z enterprise server, which was announced on July 12, 2011. The z114 offers low entry cost, extreme granularity and scalability, extensive growth options, and full participation in a workload-optimized, multi-architecture zEnterprise Ensemble. The material presented will include considerable technical detail on z114 structure, processor design, configuration and features. It will also include a brief review of the InfiniBand I/O infrastructure brought forward from the z10 BC and an introduction to the new PCI Express (PCIe) I/O infrastructure announced with the z114. A "deep dive" on the PCIe and InfiniBand I/O infrastructures common to the z114 and the z196 will be presented in session 9797, "Introducing the new z196 and z114 PCIe I/O and Coupling Infrastructure", which follows in the same room. This presentation will provide valuable planning information to migrate to a z114 from an older System z server or to implement a new z114 as a cost effective way to exploit of the full range of zEnterprise Ensemble technology. This session is hot of the press and all new for SHARE in Orlando. It assumes a general background in previous System z servers, z/Architecture, and System z operating systems.
