Most likely you have heard of the z/VM Operating System; IBM's premier virtualization product on z Enterprise; but perhaps your initial encounters with z/VM have scared you away from doing anything with the system. Certainly understanding things like the Control Program; CMS and virtual machines can be intimidating. This hands-on workshop is intended for people with no z/VM background. The purpose of the lab is to introduce you to the z/VM operating system from an “end-user” perspective. You will experience logging into a virtual machine and have the opportunity to execute various CP and CMS commands that will help you become familiar with z/VM and form the foundation for working as a z/VM System Programmer. You will also be introduced to XEDIT; the editor included with the CMS operating system. Along the way; we will cover the basic structure of z/VM; and put the commands you are working with into the larger system context. You will learn about things such as the control program; user directory; CMS; service machines; and much more. This workshop is an excellent place to start if you are interested in z/VM; and also if you are planning to attend the z/VM SSI Installation; Migration; or Upgrade hands-on workshop.
