Finding new programmers is a pressing problem for most mainframe shops. At the University of Texas at Austin; we have not tried to find experienced programmers; instead; we seek candidates with technical apptitude and positive attitudes. We then have a formal training program for imparting the skills and knowledge they will need as successful developers. This training program began in the 1970's and has evolved and adapted with changes in technology and our environment. This presentation will describe the history of this program; how it works; and the benefits we derive from it.-Curtis G. Pew-The University of Texas at Austin
