With new modernized z/OS applications leveraging new technologies such as z/OS Connect and the cloud, isolating severe performance issues can challenging.
In this session the speaker will provide examples where customer spent weeks trying to discover the cause of crippling application performance issues. None of their existing application and middleware tools provided any indication of the cause. The key turned out to be hidden in z/OS Communications Server.
In one example, a poorly designed application resulted in hundreds of TCP/IP connections per second. This caused the backlog connection limit to be exceeded, resulting in crippling application performance. This condition was hidden to the tools monitoring the application middleware: CICS, DB2 and z/OS. Only z/OS Comm Server was able to see the cause for the application issues.
The speaker will also discuss how real time enterprise health dashboards, from z/OS Comm Server feeds, helped to simplify and automatically detect critical problems impacting applications.
This will be illustrated with a live demo of IBM's strategic z/OS Communication Server monitor, IBM OMEGAMON for Networks and NetView for z/OS.-Ernie Gilman-IBM
