Come to this session for a detailed technical overview of the IBM zEnterprise 196 (z196) and an update on new z196 features and functions announced on August 12, 2011. The material presented will include considerable technical detail on z196 design and function: processor design including enhanced cache design and out of order instruction execution; memory design including redundant array of independent memory (RAIM) technology and memory offerings; and I/O subsystem structure, including a brief review of the current InfiniBand based I/O infrastructure and a brief introduction to the new PCI Express (PCIe) I/O infrastructure just announced. A "deep dive" on the z196 PCIe and InfiniBand I/O infrastructures common to the z196 and z114 will be presented in session 9797, "Introducing the new z196 and z114 PCIe I/O and Coupling Infrastructure". A roadmap will be offered to other zEnterprise System technical topics to be presented in other sessions, including "deep dive" sessions on the just announced IBM zEnterprise 114 (z114) - Session 9796, the zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension (zBX) - Session 9690, and the zEnterprise Unified Resource Manager. This session is an updated version of a session given at SHARE in Anaheim. It assumes a general background in previous System z servers, z/Architecture, and System z operating systems.
