The most popular software performance monitors have one thing in common: Their methods of measurement require z/OS resources, and in many cases those resources are charged to the monitored address space, thus creating a somewhat skewed picture. What if there was a way to monitor tasks with almost no software overhead, and no address space charges?
Hardware Instrumentation Services (HIS) have been part of z/Architecture hardware for years, with access to this information being externalized to customers with z/OS 1.9. Substantial improvements to the HIS interface became available with z/OS 2.1, and the improvements continue with newer releases. Phoenix Software International's zHISR product exploits these HIS improvements, allowing you to monitor applications for performance problems with very little overhead. Come see how this works!-M.
